Sept. 10-12 in So. Nevada
Three generation McMillin Racing team leading race-record 35
Unlimited Class 1 cars to 9th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300
Las Vegas' Troy Herbst has won twice in Primm, twice this year
And 15 times in Class 1 since 1997 enroute to six season titles.
LOS ANGELES
(August 23, 2004) -- If SCORE Trophy-Trucks are the super stars of desert
racing, then the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars are clearly the
best supporting cast for next month's 9th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300.
Bringing the first three-generation team in the history of a SCORE race in the
U.S., San Diego's McMillin Racing will help lead a race-record 35 entries in
Class 1 to Southern Nevada.
Round 4 of the five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Series
will be held Sept. 10-12 in Primm, NV
Celebrating its
31st anniversary this year as the World's Foremost Desert Racing Series, the
SCORE Desert Series is returning
to Southern Nevada for the last of its two U.S. races this season. With a U.S.
race-record 21 vehicles entered in SCORE Trophy-Truck, the marquee SCORE racing
division for high-tech, 750-horsepower unlimited production trucks, and the
unlimited Class 1, with its own exotic, high-speed open-wheelers, are the top
two SCORE racing classes and will break the 4-4 tie in overall victories in
this race. All of last year's top 10 overall finishers are entered, seven from
Class 1 and three SCORE Trophy-Trucks.
The 9th Annual
SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will include an event-record field of over 175 vehicles
competing in 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in Primm, located
35 miles south of Las Vegas at the California border. As of Monday, a record
167 vehicles have entered and late entries will be accepted up until race day.
The oldest driver
in the race-veteran Corky McMillin, 75, of Bonita, CA, leads the unique three-generation
McMillin Racing
team, which has entered four vehicles--three in Class 1 and one in Class 1-2/1600.
Driving for the prominent San Diego-based team will not only be family patriarch
Corky McMillin, but his youngest son Scott, 44, who will split driving duties
in another Class 1 car with his son, Andy McMillin, 17. Mark McMillin, 47, the
oldest son of Corky McMillin, will drive the third McMillin Racing entry in
Class 1. Driving in Class 1-2/1600 will be Daniel McMillin, the 16-year old
son of Mark McMillin.
Mark was the Class
1 winner in February's Tecate SCORE San Felipe, just one second faster than
his brother Scott and nephew Andy. Andy and his father Scott are currently leading
the Class 1 point race.
Corky McMillin
and his sons have earned nine SCORE season class point championships, including
eight in Class 1, in their illustrious combined careers.
"Winning
the overall title in a race is nice icing on the cake, but you can't be in the
position to win
the overall, if you don't win your class first," said Mark McMillin, who is
currently fifth in the class 1 season point standings. "Winning Class 1 is job
1, after that, whatever happens is a bonus. With the talent we have in Class
1 for the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, I can guarantee that our class winner will
also be on top, or near the top of the overall list as well. With our dad and
our sons both racing, my brother Scott and I have never had more fun racing.
For the McMillins, racing is about having great family fun, we have enough pressure
in business to win. We race for fun and winning is just a great perk."
What started out
to be a ritual of weekend trips to the sand dunes with family and friends back
in the 60's has evolved into today's McMillin Racing. Corky McMillin, who describes
himself as "overall the hill and picking up speed", is driver of record in the
No. 121 McMillin Racing Chevy-powered Chenowth with race shop manager Brian
Ewalt as co-driver. Ewalt, 45, of Chula Vista, has been with McMilling Racing
for over 20 years.
Mark McMillin,
of El Cajon, CA, will drive the No. 123 McMillin Racing Jimco-Chevy. Amazingly,
the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 win in February was the debut of his new race
car.
Andy McMillin and
his father Scott McMillin, will split the driving time in the No. 116 McMillin
Racing Jimco-Chevy.
With vehicle numbers
that reflect their class (1) and their respective starting positions, all four
McMillin Racing vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art BFGoodrich all-terrain
tires and all four are sponsored by the family-owned massive real-estate business
conglomerate: The Corky McMillin Companies.
If that isn't enough
of a lineup, McMillin Racing also includes pit support manager and co-driver
Gary Arnold, 47, who has also been part of the family operation for over 20
years. Arnold most recently split driving time with Mark's son Daniel McMillin,
racing to a third-place finish out of a race-high 39 starters in Class 1-2/1600
at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. It was Daniel McMillin's first SCORE race,
run 28 years after his father Mark McMillin began his memorable SCORE racing
career. For the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, Daniel McMillin has drawn the first
starting position in Class 1-2/1600, and will pilot the No. 1601 McMillin Racing
Jimco-VW in a class with 34 entries.
In a sport that
can imitate life, Corky McMillin asserts that lessons learned in McMillin Racing
have contributed greatly to the incredible success of his business ventures.
"The right plan, the right equipment, detailed preparation and most of all safety
for everyone involved is at the foundation of both McMillin Racing and all of
our business ventures," said Corky McMillin, who is enjoying his 28th season
of SCORE racing.
The increasing
allegiance of friends, employees and associates has resulted in McMillin Racing
having one of the largest followings in all of SCORE desert racing, especially
in Baja California.
And while the three
Class 1 McMillin cars should be among the race leaders, Class 1 is filled with
talented, well-proven racers, including the Class 1 winners from six of the
first eight years of the race and 20 drivers with at least one career win in
the competitive SCORE Class 1.
At
the top of the Class 1 list of former Primm winners is Las Vegas' Troy Herbst,
38, the youngest of the three racing Herbst brothers. Troy Herbst is a six-time
SCORE Class 1 season point champion, has won this race twice (1999 and 2001)
and he has won Class 1 a total of 15 times since 1997 in the No. 128 Terrible
Herbst Motorsports Smithbuilt-Ford.
Last year's Class
1 winner, Chuck Hovey, 36, of Escondido, CA, returns in the No.107 Allways Racing
Jimco-Chevy as does the first champ in 1996, Ron Brant, Oak Hills, CA, who will
drive the No. 102 Jimco-Chevy.
The other returning
Class 1 winners are 1998 winner Dale Ebberts, Canyon Lake, CA, and 2000 champ
Steve Sourapas, Rancho Santa Fe, CA, Ebberts, who was also second last year
in Primm behind Hovey enroute to the 2003 SCORE Class 1 and overall point crowns,
will be driving the No. 100 Inland Truss Racing Jimco-Toyota.
Sourapas will be
the co-driver this year for Brian Ickler, Poway, CA, as Ickler Motorsports debuts
its No. 110 Jimco-Chevy. Ickler, 19, was last season's SCORE Lite class winner
in Primm enroute to winning SCORE Rookie of the Year honors along with five
of six races and the 2003 SCORE Lite class point championship.
In a sport where
there is no qualifying or open pre-running (in the U.S.), the computerized drawing
for start positions has added significance, No. 101 in Class 1, the team of
Rick Wilson, Long Beach, CA and Las Vegas' Bekki Wik, will be the first starters
in Class 1 in the Wilson Motorsports Jimco-Chevy in the afternoon section of
the race. Class 1 will start immediately after the behemoth SCORE Trophy-Trucks.
Wilson's
brothers Randy and Ronny are also entered in separate vehicles in Class 1 for
Primm, while Wik, the only two-time female SCORE class champion (1998 and 2000
in Class 1-2/1600) is one of two female drivers entered in the race. The other
is Wik's niece-Day Gang-who is driver of record in Class 1-2/1600.
With the $10,000
Kartek bonus also awaiting the 2004 SCORE Overall point champion, a total of
just 61 points separate the top 15 overall point leaders after the first three
rounds of 2004. SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position
and number of vehicles that started the race within each class.
Admission
will be free to the spectator area,
which will have grandstands as well as the SCORE Vendor's Village.
Pre-race festivities
on Friday, Sept. 10, for the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, including tech and contingency
and the SCORE Manufacturer's Midway, will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. behind
Buffalo Bill's Resort. The post-race awards celebration will be held at the
Star of the Desert Arena on Sunday (Sept. 12) at 9 a.m.
